The Edit and Reflection on your ‘Documentary in a Day’

#6

Approaching people for an interview
We went out and found some people who were willing to do an interview, and asked them some simple questions about home. Some of  the interviewees were very happy to do it, but some of them not so much and felt a little uncomfortable in front of the camera. It was also hard to approach people as not everyone was willing to be interviewed. However, I found it a lot easier this time around as we had previously done this exercise before.

Setting up the light for an interview
We used two types of lights, the kino and LED lights. One as a fill light and the other as a key light. The fill light is used to separate the subject from the background. We have practiced how to set up the lighting equipments before, so on the day it was not a challenge for us. I really liked how the lighting turned out. It was very suitable for an interview and separated the subject from the background nicely.

Besides that, we also used a lapel mic instead of a boom that day. I think it was a good choice for when we did the interviews as it allowed us to record the interviewee’s voice very easily and clearly. It was also very easy to hide the tiny mic, and that the mic line could also be hidden under the clothes.

The interview is the hardest for me. Even though we wrote the questions a few days before the interview, having to ask others the questions were a big challenge for me because I found it hard to guide them to talk more about something that is personal, and in some cases, that could be something that they are not willing to share with people whom they do not know very well.

Edit

I always feel very happy and excited when it comes to editing the footage that we have shot.

For this project, I want to focus on interviewee’s answer about home. I made titles “what makes a place home for you” and “feelings about home” to bring focus on the interviewees’ answers.

There were also some challenges face when editing my project. The first is that we could hear other people’s voice in the interviews. There were also some ambient sound. When editing the project, I had to figure out what to do with those sound problems. I used the marker tool to tune down the other person’s voice and added some background music to make it less obvious. These are two ways that can be used to hide the ambient sound and other person’s voice. I also used the marker tool to tune up and tune down the background music, because I wanted the interviewees’ voice to remain the primary sound throughout. In order to do that, I needed to tune up the interviewees’ voice and tune down the background music in some cases.

I also purposefully added some gaps between the footage for a better transition. The gap creates silence and gives the audience some time to ponder on what was being said.

For video transitions, I used many effects on this project. By doing so, it creates a smoother transition between the different footages.

Peer Feedback

I am very happy to watch projects of digital story which from other groups and give the peer feedback.  Overall, I think everyone did a great job, cause I know some of them (just like me) have no any background information about media or social media. I’m impressed about their projects.

1. Difference is beautiful

Trailer was made by Francez, Dominic and Olivia, Difference is beautiful is well, beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqrC2Bo0NTI&feature=share

Strength

  • A really good idea to show the gestures of indian. it very match to the digital story, the ideas was differ from other groups
  • I like the way that they present to us , Using different ways to edit the pictures. The colorful images are full of the indian style, Music is lovely.

Weakness

  • Actually, I can’t understand the gestures in this video, Although it is a trailer, But I think it need to make the meaning of gestures more clear, because most of people could not understand well of indian’s gestures.  Perhaps they can use narrative way to explain the gestures.
  • It may be another way which could appeal audiences attention.

2 Namaste Bharat

This video made by Cici Seven Evey and Caroline

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGT3gRqkk0U

This group done a lot of pre-production work, and I think they did a good job on social media strategy, and I really like the blog which they wrote. https://namastebharat2015.wordpress.com/

Strengths:

  • I like the opening of this video, very clear to show the video about what this video are made for. They have some interviewees give some feedback about what they though about India. There is a nice opening of the video which catch audiences eyes.
  • They are good at using Photoshop to edit they images. Nice idea added the pictures when Indian girl do an introduction of indian’s culture

.

Weakness

  • The improvement is that they can be more good to be conscious of timing in their edit. I think the footage can be cut more perfectly, I cannot no hear some of the interviewees voices clearly, some of the footages were cut too quickly. May be need more gaps , more silence or more time to ponder. or may be can add subtitles

7 Days of Yoga Video

This blog supplemented with videos is made by Cassie, Shane, Peter and Tessa

https://7daysofyoga.wordpress.com/

Strengths

  • It is interesting to watch these videos, Yoga is a big culture thing of India. It is cool to see them practice yoga in the video.
  • Great colour tone in this video, It makes me feel peaceful when I watch those video, and I think they chose music that complemented very well.
  • The footage which they edit were wonderful, Aesthetically though simple, used different angles to present Yoga, Cassie did amazing poses, all of the poses were perfect and  a good effort from Peter. Looking at those photographs may encourage someone to start learning Yoga.
  • I also like the blog posts that they wrote. I liked the yoga content and also their personal story of yoga.

Weakness

  • They used 7 videos to present their project, it’s thoughtful, But if I were them, I would have put all of the footage together and divided them with words like day one, day two and so on. I like watch the whole video instead of having to scroll the page to find the next video.
  • They could also add some subtitles in the video, to show their feelings when practicing yoga or they could also add some poems to recreate the mood of practicing yoga.

Forbidden Lies

Car voice: I think that this is easy one to record the sound, It may hold  the boom to record the car voice

The actress  throws her scarf  into the air and when it falls to the ground, an abstract sound is used to make the action appear more dramatic. I think this one was really hard to record. So in my opinion, the sound may be edited in this part. Using marker tool, because in this clip, It had a beautiful and sort background music. So I think, the editor tune down the background music and tune up the abstract sound

In the next clip, a woman who is walking in desert and we can clearly hear the sound of footsteps, I think the editor used the same technique to edit this footage. As the woman continues walking in the desert, she starts to disappear like sand being blown away by the wind. It probably used sound effect to edit this footage , cause we cannot record the sound which the woman disappear, the only way to do that is editing this layer of sound.屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午6.01.13 屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午6.21.35

It then cuts to a mid shot of a woman who is being interviewed in this footage the editor use the non-sync sound until she starts type the keyboard. In here we can clearly hear the sound of typing keyboard and in this scene it also use mid shot to film this lady, so I think the people may use the boom to  close to the keyboard and the editor may also tune up the keyboard sound when s/he edit this part of sound.

Whilst interviewing this old lady, we can hear the sound of birds in the background, so it is possible  when the scene was shot, the birds had just landed on the trees, or may be the editor found some bird sound and made a layer of bird sound over the lady’s voice, the reason why the editor may have added the bird’s sound in here, could be to add a nature and laid back feel to the interview

The clicking sound of a camera in this scene, I am not this is good match to this footage, but in here, I think it is easy to edit this part of footage.

The audio of the two women reading the same book from these two different scenes are layered together nicely. And in this footage, the editor also added background music that hints the audience that something bad is about to happen.

It cuts to the close shot, and it typically focus on this lady’s hand, so the boom holder may get very closer to record the paper sound and the sound of lady hitting on the table.屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午7.19.40

We can hear the tiny bit of shaver sound when the guy who trim the hair of someone else. I think that it may record the shaver sound clearly first, and then the editor added the background music in the footage, s/he may tune down the shaver’s sound and tune up the background music.

his scene was shot by using lapel mic (maybe) we can clear hear this lady sound in this part. Or it probably record this woman’s sound twice time and then manipulate the audio together seamlessly.

屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午7.27.09

The coin sound in this footage, I think it is easy one to edit these coin sound in the footages, it hard to record those sound when shooting this scene, but it is easy to added those sound in the footage.

屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午7.38.12

We can hear a lot of detail sounds in next footage, the sound of drawer when people found something, and women light the cigarette sound. All of the sound could be record first and then added those sound in the editing room.
