Industry research blog post:

I wrote some general questions and send e-mails to people who are expert in media field. Unfortunately, as we know, not all of them reply the email. but I also got some really good suggestions from them. I also did the Google searched of these questions to see if they were anything readily available on the internet.

One of them gave me some tips on how to get an internship.They probably won’t just hire you unless you are highly recommended by someone or have vey useful skills to the organisation.

Do not pretend you know everything, play dumb and soak up as much info as you can. Many people are very protective of their techniques and method, so they may think you are a spy or something, you may run into that type of mentality.

The other suggestion is on how to be a professional colourist. I am very interested in colour correction and colour grading, and his suggestion is that the biggest misunderstanding is that you have to have some sort of special skills to begged at colour correction. People think you need special magical eyes. And there’s nothing from the truth.

What you really to do is learn how to bypass your brain, because we don’t see the way we think we do. As a result, if you rely on your eyes you’ll never become good at it, especially in the beginning.

The Camera tips I got which form one of my Chinese friend, he   a photographer, but he uses the complex language even in Mandarin, I can’t understand all of it, because of industry dragon. He also shares his own experience about the exposure, he said It would be better to take photos in a low exposure rather over exposure because you can get more details and allows you to fix the image in post-production.

I also search for how to cut a documentary and suggestion is that Working with the director and crew before shooting, to insure that the film is being shot with editing in mind. Similarly, the editor should then be able to go into the edit knowing exactly what the director’s vision, It’s typically not possible for the you (the editor) to be present all the shooting, so let the director know what notes you would like on the shoot. The good takes, the blown takes, b-roll, etc. This will be immensely helpful when you start logging footage.

Get a first cut done quickly because final cut often looks nothing like the first cut. Documentaries typically have far more revisions than narrative films, and since there is so much footage to pull from, each revision looks that much different. The point being that your first cut doesn’t’t need to be perfect, because it is going to change immensely anyways.

Task 3: investigate digital tools

YouTube and Instagram

YouTube: video  Instagram: images (A image worth than thousand words)

YouTube is great platform to start posting my documentary. YouTube at this point is by far the most dominant video hosting site on the Internet.

And It is very easy and conveniences for uploader to uploaded the video to their YouTube account. Many people have now come to understand the world through the YouTube paradigm where news or entertainment are mediated via videos that can be accessed anywhere at any time.

The reason that I upload my video on the YouTube because that YouTube have some really good feature, one of them is that YouTube has an information box. I really like this function because this feature gives a detail about uploader, you also can put your other social media platform account on here. Providing more information to viewers.

YouTube also allow you to playback videos that other users have uploaded. When you join YouTube you make an account or channel, this is where you uploaded videos. You don not have to be a member of YouTube to watch videos. My documentary is comprising 3 episodes each of them 3-5 minutes in length. I think YouTube is a great platform to achieve my goal. Otherwise, YouTube have a comment section which allows the viewers to leave the comment. They can express their feeling about the contents, leave the comments and discuss it.


YouTube editor provides a simple tool for you to edit videos offline and then upload the footages to YouTube. You can simply go to Editor and edit all your content online adding effects. There are some basic edit options which allows you to transitions and cropping your videos as needed on your timeline.

One of most useful features on YouTube is annotations but also one of the most underused features.  Annotations allows you to create clickable links within videos that can link to playlists, channels, and videos. It’s very handy feature. With annotations you can layer text, links, and hotspots over your video. It helps you enrich the video experience by adding information, interactivity and engagement.


Instagram as a mainstream social media platform for people sharing images everyday. There are more than 70 million photos are uploaded to Instagram and users are clicking the like button 2.5 billion times. As a visual platform, Instagram is perfect for catching audience’s attention rather than utilizing text.  As I mention in Task 2 before, I will also make a 15 second highlight video to promote my documentary on Instagram. Beside, I will make an official Instagram account for them. I will put the video link and images on Instagram and also share their splendid artworks on the Instagram. The audiences can click the different links to see more information about them. If the viewers are interested to buy these art work, they can contact with these artists.

Task 5 Audiences analysis

Why are you creating this story? Goals, rationale, purpose, premise? What do you want your audience to experience or understand?

I have been thinking to make this documentary last year, I am huge passionate on the visual art. I also know some young artists who live in awful condition but still keeping for chasing their dream. I want let more people to know their situation.

Purpose:  Because some of these young artist’s parents are against they drawing, they want their children find normal live and live in a normal life. I hope this video can educate these parents to support their children.


Premise: The purpose is to encourage the young person or artist to chase their dreams, despite the financial uncertainty

For Art dealer: some Art dealer may be interested in these artworks, and want to buy one.


What is your story?

My story is about some young people who live in awful conditions. They are not interested in a full time job but rather spending all their time, day and night, producing and creating oil-paintings. This is reality documentary-making depicting art graduates who paint continually. The story will show them creating artworks and living their daily lives. I also will interview them to talk about their experience and insight into life as an artist.

In what way will it be original, surprising, human, passionate, truthful or relevant to your audience?

This Documentary could as an educational video for these young artists’ parents. I also will make an Instagram account for them to upload their artworks on Instagram, Instagram also provides a platform for them to showcase their works, to let more people see about Chinese artworks.

Where will you publish your story?

I will upload this video on YouTube and the picture I will upload on Instagram.

What platform/s and hardware are suited to your audience? E-books, blogs, videos, photos, podcasts, tweets, status updates, apps, games, forums, websites?

Because this is traditional documentary, so I will make a 3-5 episodes’ video each of them 3-5 minutes in length. It could be like as a showreel which to display on the YouTube. I also post these artworks on the Instagram.

Who is your audience? Who is your target viewer/user – i.e. the group you will target in promoting the work?

It could be as an educational video for parents of young artists, who are potentially aged around 50-60. The target audience could also be young people around the age of 20-30. They are passionate about art but also concerned about the unstable lifestyle and potential irregular income. They are struggling and wondering if the artistic life is right for them. Art dealers and collectors could also be interested in this video which acts somewhat as a showcase for the work of these young artists. They would then be able to follow through and make contact.


When will you create the content and start to engage your audience?

I will film this project at around mid June. What is the production process and publishing schedule?

The audiences can go to the YouTube to find out this documentary. The viewers can leave the comments and discuss the content, talking about the feeling about this video. they can give some feedback to me.

Why Do You Need a storyboard?

A film storyboard is essentially a series of frames, with drawings of the sequence of events in a film, like a comic book of the film or some section of the film produced beforehand. It helps film, cinematographers and television commercial advertising clients visualize the scenes and find potential problems before they occur- Wiki


Creating a storyboard is extremely important for planning out your video for your pre-production.

It is a graphic representation of how your video will unfold, shot by shot.  Storyboard always embed with the notes, because the storyboard will be jot down some notes about what is happening.


Storyboard is for sketch your story how scenes will look like. It doesn’t have to incredibly detailed and draw all of props or use color. You don’t have to be great at drawing either. Just provide enough details about what is happening and which character are in the scene and what the framing will look like. Because you always can write down the script and notes to help fill in the rest of the detail.



Storyboard is made up of a number of squares with pictures to represent each shot.  You can always write some notes about what is going on in the scene what is being said in the script during that shot. It’s very easy and convinces that to remind you what shot going to take step by step.


The aim of making a storyboard is that storyboard is easier to share and explain your concept for your video with other. Storyboard seem as an integral part of your video making process because it not only help visualize your ideas for your client but also help the production and post production.


Sometimes we had experiences where trying to explain something and other person can’t understand and see your vision. Someone may just can’t read through a text, such as script. But when you have a storyboard, you can show people how your video going to be, and what it will look like. This make it infinitely easier for other people to understand your idea.


Why do we need a Storyboard?

– Easy for you to explain and share your vision to people

– Time saving: The storyboard may cover all the angles and frames that you will shot. It will become very handy during making the videos. It also will save time in revisions later.

Task 2 write a digital narrative outline

Narrative outline:

There are some young people who live in awful conditions. They are not interested in a full time job but rather spending all their time, day and night, producing and creating oil-paintings. This is reality documentary-making depicting art graduates who paint continually. The story will show them creating artworks and living their daily lives. I also will interview them to talk about their experience and insight into life as an artist. This video will also display the struggle they endure with the people who are against them. Some parents are totally against their choice to work as an artist and would prefer them to have a ‘normal job’ and live a ‘normal life’. In China most parents hope their children will be lawyers, engineers, doctors etc. They think those are decent jobs. Of course they want their children to be able to support their own family. They believe that jobs in the arts can’t earn good incomes, especially in small cities.  In this video, I want to show the conflicts between young artists and their parents and will also gather the opinions of parents plus their mentors. The tutors of young artists are very supportive towards their students and fully understand their conflicts.

After these young artists graduate, they call themselves artists. They believe they are experts in their field. They believe they will successful. Some young artists are still living near the university to chase their dreams, whereas some of them will give up due to feeling too much stress and confusion. I will also focus on university tutors and professors to show the advice they give to their students. If these tutors are happy to share their own experience – how did they overcome the challenge when they were young? They may offer words of advice. Although this is a reality show, I will also write down the storyboard and script, because it will have several different scenarios and need to take the different scenes in different spots. I would like to do some interviews with parents if they are happy to sit in front of the camera, to see what opinions will come up.

I also will interview art collectors, to get their expert opinion on what potential these young artists are showing. What kind of achievements have they made two years after graduation? Are they being closer to their dreams or not? Which art genre are currently appealing to an audience and what art are people buying? The gallery management and art dealer would be the next interviewees, as these young artists will be hoping to exhibit their work. What advice would a gallery manager give them? Do they think their works have potential or not? Are their artworks catering to the audience aesthetic? I also will interview a few visitors in the galley randomly, to ask them their opinions on the art works.

What has been accomplished by these young artists in two years after graduation? I know some of them send their works to the China International Poster Biennial. Some of them get a fairly good result. Their artworks become more mature and display their own painting style. How do they feel about the work they’re creating? Have their skills improved? What sort of audience response is their art evoking?

These artists and their tutors have founded an art alliance called Wave, meaning that they’re hoping more and more artists can join in this group, especially the upcoming young artists.  They have their own gallery in this Art organization.

One of the sponsors gives them a free space for painting in, as most young artists spend their money on pigment and other painting material and equipment and often don’t have to means to rent a space. So in the first 3 years, the sponsor provides a place for them for free. I would like to interview this sponsor to see what he stands to gain from being so generous.

EventsThis Digital story is talking about the street children in brazil. This is a powerful story by using the shock pictures to display millions of children fall asleep in the street. The narrator told us Brazil is lack of homes and families to raise those children up. Kindness and caring become scarce in the face of such suffering. But worst of all the public doesn’t help them, they fear them. Even polices put the children in jail.Then the video keeps showing us the pictures of the children who suffering, crying.

Actors – The actors in this video are street children. Strong and clear editing in the whole piece, I think narrator also as an actor

Time –  The photos was taken in the past but the events unfold in the present.

Place – In the very beginning, the picture shows us where is the Brazil and show us the wonderful pictures in the brazil. But the main story of this events take place in the Brazil streets and jails . Through the pictures we can see children fall asleep in the street and live in jails. Children were getting abused and living in a terrible environment.

Narrative elements:

Ordering: The events are in chronological order from start to the end. The narrator tells you about the street children suffering in Brazil.

Pace: It is in real time

Focalization: it is point of view in the culture, this story is told to make a point rather than just told the facts. The narrator hope people can do something to change those children’s live.


The narrator tells the story, he should be omniscient because he need to organise the whole story that display the story clearly. The aim of this story is that giving audiences’ attention, telling to the world that street children are suffering in Brazil. I would say the narrator is reliable because he give us a lot of pictures of street children suffering in Brazil.

Text: This is a digital story on YouTube,  Using lot of pictures to tell a story. Strong and clear editing.

Tradition Narrative Features

Linearity: This would be a linear narrative because it tells a story from start to finish, It doesn’t go to another events.

Series of conflicts: The conflict is the government doesn’t  help the street children even fear them. The narrator shows more pictures that street children was killed and abused which leads the whole story to the climax. The resolution is the narrator wants audience to help them, do everything that we can do to help those children. Stop ignoring, Stop abusing, Stop killing.

Protagonist and Antagonist: I thought the protagonist are the children who are suffering and abusing in Brazil. The antagonist could be the government or people who abuse this children.

Three act structure:  The first act is the narrator telling us where is Brazil and how this city looks like. The second act is street children suffering in Brazil. And the third one is the narrator give an information to the worldwide, he hope this video can help those children to change their situation.

Hero’s Journey

The story starts with a great landscape in Brazil at 0:23 ‘ It’s one of the most beautiful countries in the world’ and then narrator turns to introduce the street children in Brazil. The narrator might meet with mentor who offer the images of homeless children

The most of videos in the Youtube or Vimeo have the similarity modules such as a play button, a stop button, and also have a share button which you can share videos to others, you also can press the ‘Like’ and ‘Dislike’ button.  you also can repost it on the other social media platforms or in you personal Blog if you got the permission, such as WordPress Wix etc;

Variable: It’s on the Youtube, so It actually wouldn’t be reconfigured and recombined.


The music and images are programmable, it can be scaling an images or change the colour of the video file.


Participatory elements The section where the viewers can interact. It allows viewers to manipulate, contribute to, They can share it to various social media platforms, such as google, Facebook, Vimeo LinkIn etc; people allow to leave the comments.

PIM final version

Compare to my rough cut video, I changed quite lot this time because I want to use the horizontal video to present my work. Because I don’t like the vertical video on the internet. It’s easy and convenient for people who shoot mobile videos in portrait mode but I prefer the widescreen format rather than skinny and tall video. In addition I think it is a uncouth amateurs if you upload the vertical video on the internet.

I used the same way to upload my footages into the Premiere, Firstly, I used the slo motion and time lapse to shoot my friends’ lips  and then drag those footages into the iMovie, If I upload the original footage into the Premiere, those slo motion and time lapse footages become to the normal version. I still have no idea why It doesn’t play out like it is in the phone.

Because all of my footages were filmed vertically, so this time I have to restart film the lips video in horizontally. and I also filmed my friends in a same place and same time,because it can make all of my footages have the same color and background.

I change quite a lot in my last video. last time I just put all the videos together , and I didn’t edit much on it. Moreover, it only the slo motion in my draft one, but in the final version. I embed the time lapse and slo motion together. Those video effects make the last video become to more funny and unique. I also add the music into on it . I think the music is really good to match my final  version.

Project 4 version 1. week 11


In my project, I want to use slo motion to depict people’s lip movement, and slo motion is really good idea to shoot the lip move in that way. I think this is very easy and convenient to use phone to film people’s lip movement. and using Slo motion can make the lip’s movement to be more funny and unique.

The problems

The slo-motion version can not be played when the footage was uploaded into the Premiere, the footages become to normal video, and I don’t know why it doesn’t play out like it is in the I import the footages into the iMovie, and then use the iMovie to put those footages together, and then import the footage back to the Premiere. but the another problem is that footage were cropped, because I used vertical video to film people’s lip and the Footages are cropped, you can only see them bottom lips. Usually, I prefer to shot the vertical photos and videos because you can hold you phone in one hand. and I didn’t think about it can become a problem.

The big problem is that, all of my footage were filmed vertically,  so I have to film the those footage again in horizontally. because Horizontal images are roughly the same format as how we see the world and have some distinct properties. But the other thing is that I might not find many people to do their lip movement again. as all the people I film were in different places and time of day. Therefore, was a different color and background.

PIM Project 3 Sketch 2.6

From our chosen case study, #Selfie #NoFilter by Patrick Kelly, we identified the affordance of interaction as we felt that a selfie when shared online allowed for interaction between people.

Sketch 2.6 is a piece of a person doing the facial message. I record this video by using the Slo motion. In the Slo motion, we can see how funny the people’s lips movement. I think this shot was a little bit similar to #Selfie #NoFilter by Patrick Kelly,  facing on the camera by using different model or filter to film people. It was really good thing to exploring how to use the slo motion to make a funny video, or to change the way which we usually watch about. And I really thankful for my little brother to inspired me which gave me a lot of ideas to shot a funny video by using slo motion.

Sketch 2.6 was filmed on a bright car during the sunny day , and therefore was relatively easy to get good shots. I like this video because it a direct interaction between people. and It make me laugh a lot.
