The Edit and Reflection on your ‘Documentary in a Day’

#6

Approaching people for an interview
We went out and found some people who were willing to do an interview, and asked them some simple questions about home. Some of  the interviewees were very happy to do it, but some of them not so much and felt a little uncomfortable in front of the camera. It was also hard to approach people as not everyone was willing to be interviewed. However, I found it a lot easier this time around as we had previously done this exercise before.

Setting up the light for an interview
We used two types of lights, the kino and LED lights. One as a fill light and the other as a key light. The fill light is used to separate the subject from the background. We have practiced how to set up the lighting equipments before, so on the day it was not a challenge for us. I really liked how the lighting turned out. It was very suitable for an interview and separated the subject from the background nicely.

Besides that, we also used a lapel mic instead of a boom that day. I think it was a good choice for when we did the interviews as it allowed us to record the interviewee’s voice very easily and clearly. It was also very easy to hide the tiny mic, and that the mic line could also be hidden under the clothes.

The interview is the hardest for me. Even though we wrote the questions a few days before the interview, having to ask others the questions were a big challenge for me because I found it hard to guide them to talk more about something that is personal, and in some cases, that could be something that they are not willing to share with people whom they do not know very well.

Edit

I always feel very happy and excited when it comes to editing the footage that we have shot.

For this project, I want to focus on interviewee’s answer about home. I made titles “what makes a place home for you” and “feelings about home” to bring focus on the interviewees’ answers.

There were also some challenges face when editing my project. The first is that we could hear other people’s voice in the interviews. There were also some ambient sound. When editing the project, I had to figure out what to do with those sound problems. I used the marker tool to tune down the other person’s voice and added some background music to make it less obvious. These are two ways that can be used to hide the ambient sound and other person’s voice. I also used the marker tool to tune up and tune down the background music, because I wanted the interviewees’ voice to remain the primary sound throughout. In order to do that, I needed to tune up the interviewees’ voice and tune down the background music in some cases.

I also purposefully added some gaps between the footage for a better transition. The gap creates silence and gives the audience some time to ponder on what was being said.

For video transitions, I used many effects on this project. By doing so, it creates a smoother transition between the different footages.

Car voice: I think that this is easy one to record the sound, It may hold  the boom to record the car voice

The actress  throws her scarf  into the air and when it falls to the ground, an abstract sound is used to make the action appear more dramatic. I think this one was really hard to record. So in my opinion, the sound may be edited in this part. Using marker tool, because in this clip, It had a beautiful and sort background music. So I think, the editor tune down the background music and tune up the abstract sound

In the next clip, a woman who is walking in desert and we can clearly hear the sound of footsteps, I think the editor used the same technique to edit this footage. As the woman continues walking in the desert, she starts to disappear like sand being blown away by the wind. It probably used sound effect to edit this footage , cause we cannot record the sound which the woman disappear, the only way to do that is editing this layer of sound.屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午6.01.13 屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午6.21.35

It then cuts to a mid shot of a woman who is being interviewed in this footage the editor use the non-sync sound until she starts type the keyboard. In here we can clearly hear the sound of typing keyboard and in this scene it also use mid shot to film this lady, so I think the people may use the boom to  close to the keyboard and the editor may also tune up the keyboard sound when s/he edit this part of sound.

Whilst interviewing this old lady, we can hear the sound of birds in the background, so it is possible  when the scene was shot, the birds had just landed on the trees, or may be the editor found some bird sound and made a layer of bird sound over the lady’s voice, the reason why the editor may have added the bird’s sound in here, could be to add a nature and laid back feel to the interview

.屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午6.43.35

The clicking sound of a camera in this scene, I am not this is good match to this footage, but in here, I think it is easy to edit this part of footage.

The audio of the two women reading the same book from these two different scenes are layered together nicely. And in this footage, the editor also added background music that hints the audience that something bad is about to happen.

It cuts to the close shot, and it typically focus on this lady’s hand, so the boom holder may get very closer to record the paper sound and the sound of lady hitting on the table.屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午7.19.40

We can hear the tiny bit of shaver sound when the guy who trim the hair of someone else. I think that it may record the shaver sound clearly first, and then the editor added the background music in the footage, s/he may tune down the shaver’s sound and tune up the background music.

his scene was shot by using lapel mic (maybe) we can clear hear this lady sound in this part. Or it probably record this woman’s sound twice time and then manipulate the audio together seamlessly.

The coin sound in this footage, I think it is easy one to edit these coin sound in the footages, it hard to record those sound when shooting this scene, but it is easy to added those sound in the footage.

屏幕快照 2015-06-09 下午7.38.12

We can hear a lot of detail sounds in next footage, the sound of drawer when people found something, and women light the cigarette sound. All of the sound could be record first and then added those sound in the editing room.

#7 Reflection on the course

I think Sound and Image is most interesting course rather than another courses in this semester.

In the beginning of this course, we learn how to figure out of the equipments, we learn how to work in a group to shot a short video. It was really fun, we learned how to use mixer and how to set up the camera, I get  more confident to deal with camera, but not in mixer, but I think I will borrow mixer from school , and trying to get familiar with it.

After this semester, I think I feel more confident and passion in the basic edit of footage, and I really have passion on editing. Because I really interested on edit footage. I like to change the original footage, and using my creative thinking to edit the film.

In this semester, I learn how to be a different crew role in a team work, and we alway swap our roles. Most of time, I be a camera man or to be a  people who need to setting up the light. The one thing I learn from this course is that I will analysis the footages when I watch the movie. I mean, as before, I just enjoy the movies, enjoying the 3D effect or something, but now I will think about how this footage to be shot, and how editor edit the sequence. I try to put myself in a  professional situation to analysis the film.  That’s awesome!

This course encourage me to film a movies in the future, I know it still take long time to finish this goal. But I feel happy, passion and feeling confident to do that. Making videos which can satisfy myself and others

I also want to get a working experience in our school, and I know one is call ‘RMITV’  my classmate she is working on that group, and it looks wonderful . I mean, you work with people who are loving and full of passion on doing this job. They are sharing the ideas, helping each other, and shooting a beautiful video. It’s wonderful. In the next semester, I will reply to get work on that place and earning working experiences from that.

I know I am not very good at to be a camera operator, I mean, at now, we need to copy or imitate other people’s shooting style, But actually, everyone has they own shooting style, For instance, everyone has they own style when they draw a picture. Even ten people draw a same sense, but they will have ten different painting works. I think that Shooting style is same as well.

For now, I will try the best to edit my documentary project. Using the technique I learn from this course to beautify my work.

No Direction Home

At beginning, the first scene is a man who are play an electric guitar and sing a song, I have no idea about this song’s name, but there are lyrics ‘ NO Direction Home, I gonna be alone.’  This is very match to the title of this documentary. As we know, the opening for a documentary is very important, So in this Trailer, the editor use music as a precursor to crap view’s interested. 屏幕快照 2015-05-30 下午7.25.07 屏幕快照 2015-05-30 下午7.25.29

Then , the camera switches to a black and white picture, they may shoot a scene in forest where are full of fog, so the atmosphere of the this footage looked mysterious and the background music was still running at same time.

I did a short research about ‘No Direction Home’ No Direction Home is a documentary film by Martin Scorsese that traces the life of Bob Dylan, his impact on 20th-century American popular music and culture. Critic Roger Ebert gave the film 4/4 stars, stating that it ‘create a portrait that is deep, sympathetic, perceptive and yet finally leaves Dylan shrouded in mystery. I think those mysterious footage make the whole video more mystery.  and I really like the angle of shot which are shooting on the Bob Dylan’s face, especially when get close to the Bob’s face, and he sang a song, it’s really hook people’s attention and audiences can enjoy his music.the next shot introduced the some very basis information about Bob Dylan, and in this footage, we can know about  that this documentary was talking about music or musician, something related with Bob’s music life.  Bob Dylan shared his childhood and gave some photo when he was child, in this footage, we can see when the editor edit this footage, her switches different scene but the she didn’t cut off the Bob’s voice, I mean she continue play the Bob’s voice but swap the different scene. it is a good way to make a documentary, it just like Bob to explain his own story.

屏幕快照 2015-05-30 下午10.16.01屏幕快照 2015-05-30 下午10.16.13

When Bob’s voice stop, they played Bob Dylan’s music as the background music. Then the shot swap to Bob Dylan.

When introduced the Bod’s past, the editor used some old pictures which relate to Bob and describe his past, so the footage is more like an old man sharing his memory.

I think it is a very good way to make a documentary by using some old pictures, because for them  those pictures and memory is most precious thing in the world, and for audiences this pictures can interest viewers.

The first footage was showing audiences that  a man who are a singer which singing in a stage , so these documentary is clear display the key thing—music or music live.

And then in rest of 2 mins sequence, it continue to talk Bob Dylan how his father influence his and how much his love the music. So I think in the rest of documentary, it will give more detail about his music life and share his experience as well.  May be will have  some people who are very close to Bob Dylan, and they may be invited to talk more about Bob Dylan’s life, and give some reason why Bob Dylan can impact American music and culture in 20th-century maybe.
